GUIDANCE FOR HOUSEHOLDS
The departed are visible again. Hearthafter helps households and spirits decide whether to share a home.
Read how the Overlap began, how placements are reviewed, and what everyone must agree before a stay.
How the Overlap began01 / THE OVERLAP
The first sightings were reported near Ashburn, Virginia.
During a grid expansion in Northern Virginia's Data Center Alley, the living and the departed began sharing the same visible world. The effect spread beyond Loudoun County and became known as the Overlap.
Spirits returned with their memories, habits, and opinions intact. Households began offering space, but both sides needed a way to discuss their expectations before anyone moved in.
The government introduced mandatory placement reviews. Hearthafter, the Office of Living & Departed Affairs, reviews proposed arrangements and helps everyone agree on the conditions of a stay.
02 / PAIR REVIEW
A placement review considers three relationships: your household with each spirit, and the two spirits with each other.
We compare your daily routines, the company you each want, the space you can offer, and your respective boundaries.
We review your connection with each spirit separately. A good match with one does not establish a good match with the other.
We consider how their routines, interests, and boundaries work together, including how much time they prefer to spend apart.
A suggested pair still needs an introduction and consent from the household and each spirit.
03 / HOUSE AGREEMENT
Before a temporary stay, record the routines, boundaries, and exit plan everyone has agreed to.
Decide which rooms and moments belong to whom. A closed door is a boundary. So are personal belongings, private conversations, and time alone.
Agree on quiet hours, shared spaces, and everyday routines. No one should have to guess when company is welcome.
The household and both adult spirits have a say. Record what everyone agrees to, protect personal information, and revisit boundaries together.
Make a relocation plan before a stay begins. If needs change or someone wants to leave, there should already be an agreed way forward.

Requesting an introduction does not commit anyone to a placement.
